Ideally tucked at the East Midnapore district, West Bengal – Digha has been the most sought after tourist destination as the weekend getaway. Unruly sea distinguishes Digha from other Indian beaches. There are in fact 2 beaches IN Digha – Old Digha and New Digha. The sea at old Digha is always at mischievous mood on the other hand the much calmer sea at New Digha is apt for bathing.
History of Digha:
Today’s Digha is a far cry from yesterday’s Beerkul. Yes, history reveals, there was place called Beerkul where Digha lies today. Warren Hastings the Governor General of British India referred this place as the Brighton of the East. The English tourist John Frank Smith started living here in 1923 and his writings provided a good exposure to this place. In fact he further convinced West Bengal Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy to develop this place to be a beach resort. And then there were no looking back and Digha stands as one of the most gorgeous town laced with the splendor of sea- sun- and sand.
How to reach?
Bus Service
Frequent bus service is available from Dharmatala bus stand of Kolkata and many other parts of West Bengal. It takes around 5 hours to reach Digha from Kolkata. Bus service is also available from towns across West Bengal such as Midnapore, Bankura, Asansol, Bardhaman, Howrah, and, also from Orissa via Balasore (Baleswar).
Train Service
In the year 2004train services have been introduced. There is also one DMU service from Santragachhi railway station and there are three new trains from Howrah Station also.
Howrah - Digha Superfast Tamralipta Express now departs from Howrah at 06.40 hrs
and arrives at Digha station at 10.05 hrs. The return train (12858 DN) of Digha station at
10.25 hrs to arrive Howrah at 13.50 hrs.
Train times have been changed
Howrah - Digha Kandari Express (18001 UP) departs from Howrah at 14.10 hrs. Return
train (18002 DN) Digha station at 18.10 hrs to arrive Howrah at 21.45 hrs.
Santragachhi - Digha Passenger departs from Santragachhi at 18.15 hrs and arrives at
Digha station at 22:15 hrs.
Howrah - Duranto Express Train - An AC special train for tourists has been now
introduced.
Places of interest in and around Digha
Aside from the sun kissed splendor of Digha there are also a number of tourist interests in and around the Digha beach.
Udaipur: This is striking beach and is almost virgin. Lying 2 km west of Digha, in West Bengal Orissa Border,Udaipur stands as the most spectacular beaches . yes, one part of this clandestine beach lies in West Bengal while the other part lies in Orissa.
The Marine Aquarium and Research Centre (MARC) : This is the most preferred tourist destination which was established in the year 1989 during the Seventh Five Year Plan. The goal of this Centre is to display the marine biodiversity of the region and to carry out the research activities. The aquarium is opened to public on all working days from 9.30 A.M. to 6 P. M.
Lord Shiva Temple At Chandaneswar: It is only 8 km away from Digha the century old Temple of Lord Shiva at Chandaneswar,near Bengal and Orissa Border.
Junput: This is the hot fishing spot and is just 40 kms away from Digha
Shankarpur: This is also a virgin beach, only 14 km east of Digha. This is one of the most favored fishing harbours.
Subarnarekha River: At this serene salty place Subarnarekha River drains into Bay of Bengal, only 12 km away from Digha, located in Orissa-Bengal border. This has become the new destination for Digha tourists.
Talsari: This is a small delta on Bay of Bengal, only 6 km away from Digha, located on Bengal-Orissa border.
Mandarmani: Another small virgin beach on Bay of Bengal, Mandarmani is only a few km from Digha.
